THE LATE GREAT DAVID OLNEY USED TO SAY…”AHH, THERE’S KENNY MOORE COAXING THE MUSIC OUT OF THE BLACKS AND WHITES”. WELL, I COAXED THE MUSIC OF THIS PIECE OUT OF A 1930 KIMBALL BABY GRAND BORN IN CHICAGO. MY FRIEND AND AMAZING MAESTRO LEON OLGUIN PUT THE SCORE TOGETHER FOR ME ON 1/13/23. I CREATED THIS WORK AS VERNON MARS, A NAME I USE WHEN I’M OUT ON THE EDGE AND FREE WHEELING! LEON WAS GRACIOUS ENOUGH TO ACCOMMODATE MY QUIRKY MUSICAL BEHAVIOR AS HE SCORED THIS. FOR EXAMPLE THERE ARE NO BAR LINES, AND THERE IS NO TIME SIGNATURE. IT’S NOT EXACTLY FREE JAZZ ALA ORNETTE COLEMAN, THOUGH IT IS KINDA “FREE” AND AIRY, AND I THINK ONE CAN HEAR SOME OF THE COMPOSERS FROM THE CLASSICAL AND ROMANTIC AND OTHER PERIODS WHO INFLUENCED MY DRIFT. I FEEL THE IMPORT OF THE FRENCH PIANIST AND COMPOSER ERIK SATIE, WHO OFTEN UTILIZED A MINIMALIST APPROACH, PERMEATES MY “PIANO IDEA IN D MAJOR”, AND TALK ABOUT AN “OUT THERE” KIND OF GUY, ONE OF HIS WORKS WAS CALLED “TRUE FLABBY PRELUDES (FOR A DOG)”.
